The Tu Duc Tomb is located in Thuong Ba Village, Hue City, Thua Thien Hue Province. The tomb also has another name Khiem Lang meaning the Mausoleum of Modesty.

King Tu Duc’s brief biography
Tu Duc was born in 1829 and his childhood name was Nguyen Phuc Hong Nham. Tu Duc was the king from 1848 to 1883 when he died. Tu Duc was the second son of King Thieu Tri but he was selected to be the crown prince for his good education. Tu Duc’s older brother was Nguyen Phuc Hong Bao who was not chosen to be the future king for his lack of talent and aggressive characters.
Construction
Tu Duc was well educated and the architecture of the tomb was designed by the King himself in 1864. The construction of the tomb of King Tu Duc was started in 1864 and completed in 1867.
There were over 3,000 soldiers and workers mobilized for the construction. Due to the hard conditions and brutal treatment by the foremen that there was a failed rebellion in 1866 which was one of the reasons the King renamed the place to Khiem Cung (Palace of Modesty). After the King’s death the name of the complex was changed to Khiem Lang or Mausoleum of Modesty.
In the period from 1867 to 1883 the King often retreated to this site which was a palace then.
How to get there
Tu Duc Tomb is 6km to the southwest of Hue City. To get there follow the route: Le Loi Street – Dien Bien Phu Street – Le Nguyen Cat Street and Doan Nhu Hai Street.
