Tu Cam Thanh, or Forbidden Citadel, or Purple Forbidden Citadel was the inner most Citadel of Hue Citadel. The outer layers from inside out were Hue Imperial Citadel (Dai Noi) and Hue Citadel (Kinh Thanh Hue).
Travel Guide to Purple Forbidden Citadel, Hue
The Purple Forbidden Citadel was the most strictly protected layer of Hue Citadel. This citadel was where the daily life of the King and the Royal Family took place. The Purple Forbidden Citadel of Hue was behind the Thai Hoa Palace starting from Dai Cung Mon (Gate of Dai Cung).
Architecture
The architecture of the Purple Forbidden Citadel is the same as the Citadel of Hue in the way that all is balanced on the north-south axis. Once visiting the Thai Hoa Palace, the visitors proceed northward (or to the rear of the Thai Hoa Palace) then it is the area of the Forbidden Citadel.
Let us imagine a visitor enters the Dai Cung Mon Gate and proceed northward (or further inside Hue Citadel), the arrangement of the structures inside the Forbidden Citadel from south to north and from the right to the left of the visitor is as follows:
1/ Dai Cung Mon
This is the gate to the Purple Forbidden City. The gate has paths leading to the Ta Vu and Huu Vu Buildings. Behind this gate is a yard, on the other side of this yard is Dien Can Canh.
2/ Ta Vu, Huu Vu
These two buildings were where Civil Mandarins (Ta Vu) and Military Mandarins (Huu Vu) worked. These two buildings are on the two sides (east and west) of a yard. To the north of this yard is Dien Can Chanh.
3/ Can Chanh Palace
This was the daily working office of the King. The arrangements inside this palace is the same as inside the Thai Hoa Palace with a throne right in the middle and kingdom’s maps on both sides of the palace.
How to get there
Purple Forbidden Citadel is inside Hue Citadel which is right on the northern side of the Perfume River. Hue is 700km south of Hanoi, 120km north of Da Nang, 1052km north of Ho Chi Minh City. There are daily flights between either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City and Hue and the flight time from either city is 1 hour 10 minutes.
