How to travel from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Hue

Hue is 970-1050km north of Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon). Hue is a popular beach destination to both foreign visitors and Vietnamese tourists. From Hue, one can conveniently day-trip to nearby tourist attractions in the Central Region of Vietnam: DMZ, Hoi An Old Town, Da Nang... The convenient means of transportation to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue are as follows:

 By air: The trip by air starts at Tan Son Nhat Airport and arrives at Hue Airport after one-hour forty-five minutes. The airport in Saigon is 8km from the city center and that in Hue is 20km from Hue City.

By private car: The road from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue is in good conditions, but the traffic can be very busy. There are 2 routes: via the Central Highlands to the west of Vietnam and via the coastal road to the east of the country. It is a long journey and it is advised to make several stops on the way.

By local bus: There are several bus companies operating daily buses from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue. The trip starts from Ho Chi Minh City’s Eastern Bus Station and concludes at Hue City or at Hue’s southern bus station. The journey takes 23-25 hours.

By train: There are several trains from Ho Chi Minh City to Hue. The journey takes 19-21 hours depending on each train. The starting train station is Saigon and the finishing one is Hue. Both train stations are located close to the city centers.
