Ma Pi Leng Pass is a 21km road passing through an area of rocky mountains with peaks of 2,000m above sea level. The pass itself is on elevation of 1,200-1,600m above sea level. The road through the pass is called “Road of Happiness” - Con Duong Hanh Phuc.

Travel Guide to the Ma Pi Leng Pass, Ha Giang

The Hanh Phuc Road made it easy to travel between the Dong Van Town and Meo Vac Town. Besides, it made it possible for travelers to adore the sublime beauty of the surrounding mountains and ravines, which otherwise would not have been possible!

Construction of the Ma Pi Leng Pass

The pass was made in 6 years from 1959-1965 by workers from 16 ethnic groups in 8 provinces in northern Vietnam. All work, except for some work done by explosive, was manually done. The terrain was all sheer rock.

The highest leg of the pass at 1,600m required extra two years of work. There was a suicide team of 17 brave young men who had been prepared with 17 coffins when they took the job of clearing the Ma Pi Leng Mountain to make a small path of 40cm wide. They had to hang themselves on the rock cliffs, manually carved a small hole into the rock to put an explosive charge in, then asked other team members to pull themselves up before the explosion which broke only a piece of rock each time.

Thanks to the small footpath made by the suicide team that other workers could stand on and carved into the rock further to expand it to a bigger road as it is nowadays. The suicide team completed their job in 11 months.

During the construction of the Ma Pi Leng Pass the workers were attacked twice by rebels which were all crushed down soon.
