Can Tho is the capital of the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. Can Tho is 170km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Can Tho is where you can find most of the amazing things of the Mekong Delta. From Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), you can have a trip to Can Tho for 2-3 days. Below is a list of what to see and things to do in Can Tho.
1/ Visiting Cai Rang Floating Market
The market is 30 minutes by boat from Ninh Kieu Jetty and only in the morning. You had better get up early and take a boat trip to the market at 06-0800 A.M when you can capture the most vivid moments. Later in the morning, it will be less interesting as traders will have left the market. Expect to have great moments at the market and expect to have great photographs of the exotic scenes. Do not miss to taste noodle soup, or iced coffee with condensed milk, or smoothie from a cafe boat at the market.
2/ Visiting Phong Dien Floating Market
The market is 17km southeast of Can Tho City. You can travel to Phong Dien by car or boat boat. The same as Cai Rang Floating Market, Phong Dien Floating Market is from early in the morning to 09:00 A.M only.
3/ Kham Lon Can Tho (Big Prison of Can Tho, 8 Ngo Gia Tu Street, Ninh Kieu, Can Tho)
The prison relic was built by the French in 1878-1886 and it was used to contain Vietnamese patriots. There is some history for you to learn visiting the site.
4/ Can Tho Museum (1 Hoa Binh Boulevard, Ninh Kieu, Can Tho)
It is where to learn about the history of the Mekong Delta and the Kinh (Viet), Khmer and Hoa (Chinese) communities in Can Tho and the Mekong Delta.
5/ Quang Trieu Hoi Quan or Chua Ong (Chinese Congregational Assembly, 32 Hai Ba Trung Street)
Quang Trieu Hoi Quan was founded in 1894-1896 by local Chinese-origin communities.
6/ Khmer Pagoda - Munir Ansay (36 Hoa Binh Boulevard)
You come here and learn about Khmer culture and spiritual life in the Mekong Delta.
7/ Orchards and Ecotourist sites
There are several orchards and eco-tourist sites which offer a wide range of activities to the visitors such as taking part in farming life, cooking class, .. If you have time, then visit Con Son Island in Binh Thuy where you will discovery a different world with households raising fish in cages in the Mekong River, exuberant orchards… Homestay is available in many families.
8/ Cycling tours through orchards and handicraft villages
There are several handicraft villages in Can Tho such as making rice paper, bamboo knitting, fish sauce, fishing nets, ceramics…
9/ Bang Lang Stork Sanctuary
The stork sanctuary is 60km from Can Tho City. The best time to visit the bird park in either in the morning (5-7:00 A.M) or late in the afternoon (1700-1830).
10/ Night market by the riverside near Ninh Kieu Jetty
This is a great place to taste local food, fruits,… and get relaxed at the end of the day.
