May is start of the summer in North Vietnam with mostly sunny and warm days with short-lived occasional rains, the summer in the Central Coast of Vietnam with short-lived occasional rains, the rainy season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam meaning short-lived daily rains.
1/ North of Vietnam
In the first week of 2019, it was mostly cloudy or rainy days in all of northern Vietnam with fairly pleasant temperatures.
- Northeast of Vietnam (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang, Thai Nguyen): mostly cloudy and rainy, 17-30oC. Dong Van Plateau was cloudy and rainy, 17-21oC.
- Northwest of Vietnam:
+ Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai: mostly cloudy and rainy, 22-30oC, 25-34oC in Lao Cai. Sapa was cloudy and rainy, 13-23oC. Mu Cang Chai was mostly cloudy, 17-26oC.
+ Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau: cloudy mostly, 22-34oC, hot regionally 35-36oC for in couple of days. Moc Chau was cloudy mostly and some thunderstorms, 18-28oC.
- Lowlands (Halong Bay, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh): cloudy most, some days with rains, 23-31oC.
The second week of May 2019 came with a spell of weak northerly cool wind which is just normally found in the winter in the North. Some rains were found across the North, the temperatures were extremely pleasant all over the region; for a few days the North’s weather switched back into the winter!
- The Northeast of Vietnam had mixed weather when the northerly cool wind blew: rains, clouds and mild sunshine. The temperatures were mostly pleasant: 19-27oC in the first half and 23-31oC in the second half. Dong Van Plateau of Ha Giang enjoyed days with clouds, rains and thunderstorms, 13-22oC.
- The Northwest of Vietnam
+ Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai: mostly clouds and sun, some scattered rains, 21-29oC in the first half, 24-33oC in the second half. Sapa had rains and clouds mostly, cold, 12-21oC. Mu Cang Chai had days with rains, clouds and sun, 17-26oC.
+ Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau: mostly days with clouds, some rains, 20-34oC.
- The lowlands enjoyed lovely days with mostly half sun and half clouds, some rains, breezes and pleasant temperatures, 22-27oC in the first half, 24-33oC in the second half.
The third week of May 2019 was marked by a brief heat strike caused by the foehn wind again. Luckily the week ended with cool temperatures caused by high-pressure air masses moving southwards pushing the low-pressure hot air further south.
- The Northeast of Vietnam had bright sun mostly, clouds and rains at the end of the week, 26-39 during the heat strike, 22-30 after the heat strike. The Dong Van Plateau in Ha Giang had bright sun during the heat strike, 21-29oC; clouds and thunderstorms afterwards, 17-22oC.
- The Northwest of Vietnam
+ Hoa Binh, Yen Bai and Lao Cai had bright sun during the heat strike, 26-39oC; clouds and thunderstorms afterwards, 24-33oC mostly, and 24-35oC in Lao Cai. Sapa had bright sun during the heat strike, 16-27oC; clouds and thunderstorms afterwards, 14-22oC. Mu Cang Chai had bright sun during the heat strike, 21-31oC; clouds and rains afterwards, 19-29oC.
+ Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau: Bright sun and red hot during the heat strike, 28-41oC; sun and thunderstorms afterwards, 22-33oC. Moc Chau Plateau had bright sun during the heat strike, some rains afterwards, stable temperatures 22-29oC.
- The lowlands had most of the third week with bright sun and high temperatures, 28-39oC. The air turned nice with breezes afterwards, 24-32oC and 24-30oC.
The fourth week of May 2019 came with the arrival of high-pressure cool air masses moving southwards pushing the high pressure air trough and fill up them up which caused torrential rains in northern Vietnam and Thanh Hoa Province. The temperatures were pleasant.
- The Northeast had clouds and torrential rains mostly, 22-33oC in the first half of the week and 22-30oC for a few days at the end of the month. The Dong Van Plateau (Ha Giang Province) had mostly clouds and rains, 17-22oC.
- The Northwest:
+ Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai: the first half of the week was pleasant mostly with clouds and thunderstorms, 23-30oC. It got hot briefly for 2-3 days at mid week, 27-37oC. There were torrential rains for the rest of the month, cloudy and rainy days with cool temperatures, 20-28oC. Sapa mostly had rains and clouds, 16-24oC for most of the fourth week and 14-20oC for the rest of the May. Mu Cang Chai had rains mostly, 18-25oC.
+ Son La, Lai Chau and Dien Bien: The first half of the week was mostly cloudy, the rest of the month was mostly with torrential rains. The temperatures were mostly pleasant, 21-31oC, 22-34oC, 22-29oC. Moc Chau Plateau mostly had clouds and rains, only a couple of days with sun, 20-27oC.
- The lowlands (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh) had clouds mostly for the first half of the week; sun and heat for a day at mid week, clouds and rains for the rest of the month. The temperatures were 22-32oC, 26-37oC for a day, 24-29oC for the rest of the month.
2/ The North of the Central Region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh)
The first week of May was mostly cloudy and rainy, 24-34oC, hot in a couple of days with regional temperatures above 36oC.
The second week of May 2019 the region enjoyed mixed weather in rains, clouds and sun. The temperatures were pleasant, 24-32oC.
The third week of May 2019 was characterized with a heat strike with red hot sun and high temperatures, 29-39oC. Some clouds and rains at the end of the third week, 26-30oC.
The fourth week of May 2019 was with clouds and scattered thunderstorms for the first half, clouds and heat for 3 days, torrential rains in Thanh Hoa and rains and clouds in the others for the rest of the month. The temperatures were 26-33oC, 27-36oC, and 26-32oC for the rest of the month.
3/The coastal areas in the Central Region of Vietnam (Central Coast of Vietnam including: Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan)
In the first week of May 2019, the Central Coast of Vietnam entered the summer with mixed weather: rains, clouds and sun. The temperatures started to get high in some regions.
- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue: clouds, sun and rains, 25-35oC mostly, 27-38 in some regions in a couple of days.
- Da Nang, Hoi An: Sunny and rainy, 25-34oC mostly, a day with high temperature reaching 36oC.
- Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen: sun, rains and clouds mostly, 25-34oC mostly, high temperatures surpassing 36-38oC in a couple of days.
- Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan: sun and clouds, patchy rains in a couple of days, 27-35oC mostly.
In the second week of May, the Central Coast was mixed weather: rains, sun and clouds, pleasant temperatures mostly, a couple of days that some areas had higher temperatures: 35-38oC.
- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue: clouds, sun and rains, 25-33oC mostly.
- Da Nang, Hoi An: sun and clouds mostly, some rains, 25-33oC.
- Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen: sun and rains, 25-34oC mostly, high temperatures surpassing 35-38oC in a couple of days.
- Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan: sun and clouds mostly, patchy torrential rains in a couple of days, 26-34oC mostly, 27-36oC for a couple of days.
Third week of May was with bright sun and hot temperatures.
- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue: bright sun, 28-41oC mostly.
- Da Nang, Hoi An: sun mostly, 27-38oC; some clouds at the end of the week, 26-35oC.
- Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen: strong sun and hot, 27-38oC.
- Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan: sun mostly, 27-35oC mostly, 27-36oC in Ninh Thuan.
The fourth week of May and the end of the month was quite stable with slightly different weather patterns in the first half of the week, mid week and the last days of the month.
- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue: sun, clouds and thunderstorms; then came the heat; then it was clouds mostly with scattered thunderstorms. The temperatures were 26-34oC, 28-37oC, 27-35oC.
- Da Nang, Hoi An: sun and clouds mostly, then the heat, then clouds mostly with thunderstorms. The temperatures were 27-34oC, 28-37oC, 26-35oC.
- Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen: Clouds and scattered thunderstorms and heat for the whole week, clouds and thunderstorms and nice temperatures at the end of the month. The temperatures were 28-36oC, 26-35oC.
- Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan: very stable weather with clouds, sun and thunderstorms, 28-34oC.
4/ The Central Highlands of Vietnam (Kon Tum, Gia Lai - Pleiku, Dak Lak - Buon Ma Thuot, Lam Dong)
May is start of the rainy season and it was just like that in May 2019.
In the first week was mostly with clouds and rains, lovely temperatures, 22-32oC. Da Lat got rains every day, 17-24oC.
The second week was with mixed weather: sun, clouds and daily rains, lovely temperatures, 21-31oC. Da Lat enjoyed cloudy days with mild sunshine and short-lived rains, 16-24oC mostly.
Third week was with mixed weather: clouds mostly and rains, pleasant temperatures, 22-33oC. Da Lat had clouds mostly and rains, some sun, 17-25oC.
The fourth week was with stable weather pattern: cloudy days, rains and pleasant temperatures, 21-32oC. Da Lat had rains and clouds mostly, a couple of day with sun, 17-24oC.
5/The South of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and the Mekong Delta)
May is the beginning of the rainy season in southern Vietnam with daily short-lived rains and mostly pleasantly warm temperatures.
In the first week of May 2019, the beginning of May was the end of a heat strike in South Vietnam. Torrential rains brought down the temperatures and that was the beginning of the rainy season here.
- Vung Tau, Saigon, Mekong Delta had clouds, sun and daily patchy rains, 27-35oC.
- Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc: clouds and sun mostly, afternoon rains daily, 25-36oC.
- Con Dao Islands had clouds and sun, some days with rains, 26-30oC;
- Phu Quoc Island had sun and clouds mostly, rains on some days, 28-32oC.
Second week was with cloudy days and torrential rains mostly, streets flooded temporarily, lovely temperatures.
- Vung Tau, Saigon, Mekong Delta had clouds, sun and daily rains, 26-34oC.
- Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc: clouds and sun mostly, afternoon rains daily, 25-36oC.
- Con Dao Islands had clouds and sun, some thunderstorms, 27-30oC mostly;
- Phu Quoc Island had sunny and cloudy days, rains on some days, 28-31oC.
Third week was with clouds and patchy rains across the region.
- Vung Tau, Saigon, Mekong Delta had clouds, sun and daily rains, 26-33oC.
- Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc: clouds and rains daily, 27-34oC.
- Con Dao Islands had clouds and sun, thunderstorms, 27-30oC mostly;
- Phu Quoc Island had clouds, sun and rains, 28-31oC.
