Vietnam Weather in January 2019

1/In North Vietnam, January is deep in the winter with successive spells of cold northeasterly monsoons which are mostly dominant here at this time of the year. There are sometimes easterly winds and westerly winds which may also affect the north of Vietnam during this time. When these winds meet they cause light rains for a couple of days. If the northeasterly monsoons are strong, then it is normally dry and cold. There may be some days of January that it is foggy in the North.

In 2019, the North of Vietnam enjoyed the New Year in cold and dry weather. The temperatures in the first week of January 2019 were 9-13oC in the Northeast, 9-21oC in the Northwest, 12-14oC in the lowlands.

The second week of January 2019 started in between two spells of northeasterly monsoons. The earlier monsoons were weakened and there were westerly winds affecting the region which caused light drizzles in the North. Then came a strengthening spell of northeasterly monsoon which caused rains in the North and heavy rains in the Northwest. The temperatures were 9-22o in the Northeast, 17-27oC in the Northwest, 13-25oC in the lowlands.

The third week of January 2019 came with another spell of cold winds bringing some light rains to the North for a couple of days. The temperatures were 7-16oC in the Northeast, 13-27oC in the Northwest and 13-26oC in the lowlands.

The fourth of January 2019 week started with another spell of strengthening cold winds. The winds were strong and it rained for a day, then dry and cold. The temperatures were 8-15oC in the Northeast, 13-27oC in the Northwest and 13-24oC in the lowlands.

Generally speaking, the North of Vietnam had a moist January, though it rained for not more than 3 days with each spell of cold winds. There was a couple of nights with moonlight and the last 3 days of the month with sunshine at mid day and in the afternoon.

2/ The North of the Central Region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh) has similar weather conditions to the North. In the first week of January 2019, the North of the Central Region enjoyed cold and dry weather with temperatures 12-16oC. The end of the first week and the second week came light rains, the temperatures were 15-26oC. It also rained in the third and fourth week of January 2019, the temperatures were 15-23oC.

3/The coastal areas in the Central Region of Vietnam (Central Coast of Vietnam including: Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan). January is coming towards to end of the rainy season here.

In January 2019, the Central Coast of Vietnam received heavy rains as a result of the meeting of the northeasterly winds on high altitudes and spell of cold northeasterly monsoons which took place in the first week of January. The temperatures were 14-24oC.

In the second week of January came with some light rains, cloudy days alternated with sunny days in the Central Coast. The temperatures were 19-27oC.

In rained in the third and fourth of January in the Central Coast, the temperatures were 18-28oC.

So, it seemed to rained more than usual in the Central Region of Vietnam in 2019. This was due to the meeting of the northeasterly monsoons and the easterly monsoon on high altitudes.

4/ The Central Highlands of Vietnam is around the end of the rainy season in January. Sunny days were the norm in January 2019. The temperatures were 19-29oC in the first half of the month mostly, in Da Lat they were 13-23oC. The weather conditions were almost the same in the second half of the month with temperatures 1-2oC lower than the first half of the month.

5/The South of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and the Mekong Delta) had mostly nice weather during the New Year. But the First Typhoon came right after the New Year causing heavy rains in the Mekong Delta Region.

After the Typhoon, the temperatures started getting warm in the South. Everyday was sunny and the temperatures were 24-34oC.

Typhoon in January is quite unusual but except for that all was as usual with the weather in the South of Vietnam.
