14January2019 A new spell of cold winds (northeasterly monsoon) starts blowing into northern Vietnam and continue its movements from the Northeast southwards and southwestwards. It is expected to get cold in the North and North of the Central Region of Vietnam from the early evening of 15January2019.
09January2019 A new spell of strengthening northeasterly monsoon starts having impact on the North of Vietnam causing rain throughout the region. Heavy rains are expected in the Northwest of Vietnam due to the meeting of the cold monsoon and the westerly winds on high altitudes.
02January2019 The tropical depression which had formed in the Philippines and entered the East Vietnam Sea has strengthened to be a tropical storm, the 1st Typhoon in Vietnam in 2019 (Pabuk) with sustained winds of 60-75kph.
1/The North of Vietnam
In North Vietnam, December is winter but it was slightly different in 2018. December 2018 the North of Vietnam experienced the first week with perfect and typical autumn days: sunny, breezy and absolutely pleasant. The temperatures were 14-26oC in the lowlands and 12-23oC in the mountains.
The new spell of northerly cold winds in northern Vietnam starting on the night of 27December2018 in the mountains and 28Dec2018 in the lowlands has been causing extreme cold to the north of Vietnam and torrential rains in the Central Region of Vietnam. Records show -0.5oC at Mau Son Mountain (Lang Son) on 30December2018, there has been snow and frost at Mau Son on 31December2018.
The new spell of northerly winds started having its effects in the Central Region of Vietnam from 7December2018. The northerly winds met with the southeasterly winds on high altitudes caused unusually heavy rains from Thanh Hoa to Binh Dinh with rainfalls between 300-400mm and up to over 800-900mm in some places (Cam Le, Ba Na, Binh Phu, Thang Binh... in Quang Nam and Da Nang). Floods are rampant throughout the region; Dong Ha (Quang Tri), Da Nang and Quang Nam are to suffer the worst.
In North Vietnam, November is autumn. November 2018 the North of Vietnam experienced the first week with wet weather conditions. Then, it was mostly sunny throughout the month. There was a new spell of winter monsoon to the North in the third week of November. The temperatures were 16-29oC in the lowlands and 14-26oC in the mountains.
22November2018 A new tropical depression forms in the region of the Spratly Islands and is projected to head west to the South of the Central Region of Vietnam. The tropical depression may strengthen to be a typhoon in the next 24 hours.
17November2018 The tropical depression has strengthened to be typhoon.
- 18:00 the typhoon is 240km east of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan Provinces packing sustained winds of 65-70kph. The projected path in the next 24 hours is wsw. Heavy rains may be found in South Central Coast, the Central Highlands and in South Vietnam.
In North Vietnam, October is autumn. In October 2018 there were successive spells of winter monsoon at the beginning of the month and in the middle of the month which made the temperatures drop sharply. There were rains which accompanied the monsoons for 2-4 days each time. For most of the month the North has enjoyed sunny weather, breezy and chilly. The temperatures in the Northeast were from 12-27oC, in the Northwest 15-28oC, and 16-29 in the Red River Delta and the surrounding regions.
In North Vietnam, September is autumn in North Vietnam during which there are possible typhoons and tropical depressions. There are chances that it rains a few days during the time of a tropical storms or tropical depressions.
13-September-2018: Mangkhut is 830km east south-east of Luzon (The Philippines). The Super Typhoon carries sustained winds of 200-230km/h and is heading west northwest. The question where Mangkhut is making landfall remains unclear for now.
