General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in May
May is summer in northern Vietnam with pleasant or hot temperatures mostly (24-30oC or 26-38oC), the dry and hot season in the Central Coast of Vietnam. May is the beginning of the rainy season in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam with temperatures ranging from pleasant to hot: 28-37oC.
The prevalent winds in Vietnam in May are the Northeasterly Wind, Southeasterly Wind, Westerly Wind and Southwesterly Wind. The Northeasterly Wind, if any, is often weak and should affect the Northeast and lowland of northern Vietnam only. The wind causes cloudy weather with pleasant temperatures and some short-lived showers.
In May, it is more likely that the Northwest of Vietnam comes under the influence of the Westerly Wind or foehn wind from Laos which makes the air dry and the temperatures high (35-37oC): Hoa Binh, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai.
The Central Coast of Vietnam is to come under the impact of the Westerly Wind which blows from Laos and which is a foehn wind, hence dry air and warm or hot temperatures with the high of 36-38oC.
The Central Highlands and inland of southern Vietnam are to be under influence by the Southwesterly Wind which, in May, comes from the Equator which causes daily short-lived rain and pleasant temperatures. Depending on each year, the Southwesterly Wind may come from the Bengal Bay in the first 10 days of May which is a foehn wind and which causes hot temperatures and dry air.
The sea should be calm all over Vietnam from the North to the South including the Con Dao Islands and the Phu Quoc Island in May.
