Vietnam Weather in March 2023

These are notes on Vietnam weather in March 2023 and what to know before planning travel vacations to Vietnam in 2023, be it your family holidays or your travelers’ Vietnam tours if you are a travel company or tour agency.

March is spring in northern Vietnam, the dry season in the Central Coast of Vietnam, in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam.

The air is sometimes moist or even wet in northern Vietnam due to meetings of different winds and sometimes due to that the weak Northeasterly Wind blows more from the sea bringing along more humidity than usual. The Northeasterly Monsoon usually blows inland more than from the sea which makes the winter cold and dry in northern Vietnam. There are occasionally light drizzles in northern Vietnam and it is sometimes foggy in this region in March, too. But with climate change in recent years, the normal patterns do not take place every year and it is no surprise if you find sunny weather every day with beautiful breezes; the temperatures are then extremely pleasant.

The Northeasterly Wind often prevails and the sea is often rough all over the East Vietnam Sea from the North to the South. But the North of Vietnam sometimes has the Southeasterly Wind dominant in March, or meeting and conflict of different winds.

The temperatures are often pleasant all over Vietnam in March. In high mountains in the far North it may still be chilly. But the South of Vietnam starts having hot days with temperatures over 35oC. The Central Region and the Central Highlands have lovely sunny weather with pleasant temperatures.

It may happen in March that the high-temperature region to the West and Northwest of Vietnam may build up and there is a heat strike in the Northwest of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Son La), in the North of the Central Coast (Nghe An, Ha Tinh), in the Central Coast (Quang Binh, Quang Tri), and in the South Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Tay Ninh).

The North of Vietnam experienced beautiful weather at the beginning of March  2023: dry air, mild sunshine, lovely breezes and pleasant temperatures (19-22oC).
The Central Coast entered the dry season with the most beautiful weather in a year: mild sunshine, lovely temperatures

The South of Vietnam started having high temperatures in big cities.

- Central Coast from Phan Rang-Thap Cham to Phan Thiet: sun, 19-32oC;
- Central Highlands: sun and clouds, 15-31oC;
- Southern Vietnam: sun, 21-32oC mostly, 21-35oC in Ho Chi Minh City.

Second 10 Days of March 2023

In the second 10 days of March, there was a spell of cold Northeasterly Wind. There was brief light sparsely rain and slightly cooler temperatures in northern Vietnam.

The Central Coast continued having dry weather mostly with pleasant temperatures.
The Central Highlands continued to enjoy lovely days of the dry season with pleasant temperatures.
The South of Vietnam had mostly nice and dry weather with pleasant temperatures. Big cities and industrial areas like Ho Chi Minh City, Bien Hoa and Binh Duong had some days with warm temperatures.

The weather in different regions in Vietnam:
- Northeast of Vietnam: clouds mostly with some light rain, 13-26oC in the Northeast;
- Northwest of Vietnam: clouds, sun, some light rain, 14-28oC;
- Lowlands in northern Vietnam: sun, clouds, winds, some light and isolated rain, 15-27oC;
- North of the Central Coast: sun, some light rain, clouds, 16-27oC;

- Central Coast from Quang Binh to Hue: some light rain, clouds, sun, 17-29oC;
- Central Coast from Da Nang to Quy Nhon: clouds mostly, some light rain, some sun, 19-28oC;
- Central Coast from Tuy Hoa to Nha Trang: sun and clouds mostly, some light rain, 20-29oC;
- Central Coast from Phan Rang-Thap Cham to Phan Thiet: sun and clouds, 21-32oC;

- Southern Vietnam: sun, 22-32oC mostly, 22-34oC in Ho Chi Minh City.

Last 10 Days of March 2023

The last 10 days of March 2023 was remarkable with a heat strike across several regions in Vietnam from the North to the South. It is normal that heavily populated cities in the South like Tay Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Bien Hoa and Binh Duong… are entering the hottest time of the year. And it may happens that Quang Binh and Quang Tri (Central Coast) can have some days with high temperatures in March. But a heat strike in several regions of Vietnam at the same time is something extreme! This time the heat strike was caused by high-temperature regions formed to the Northwest and West of Vietnam (in Cambodia, Laos and China).

The weather in different regions in Vietnam during the heat strike from 21-March through 23-March:
- Northeast of Vietnam: sun , 19-34oC in the Northeast;
- Northwest of Vietnam: sun, 20-34oC mostly, sun and 22-36oC in Hoa Binh;
- Lowlands in northern Vietnam: sun, clouds, some light rain, 24-36oC;
- North of the Central Coast: sun, rain, 24-37oC;

- Central Coast from Quang Binh to Hue: rain, sun, 23-34oC in Hue; 24-38oC in Quang Binh and Quang Tri;
- Central Coast from Da Nang to Quy Nhon: sun, 23-33oC;
- Central Coast from Tuy Hoa to Nha Trang: sun, clouds, 22-32oC;
- Central Coast from Phan Rang-Thap Cham to Phan Thiet: sun, 22-32oC;
- Central Highlands: sun and clouds, 20-35oC mostly, 21-37oC in Kon Tum;
- Southern Vietnam: sun, 23-34oC mostly, 24-36oC in Ho Chi Minh City, Bien Hoa, Tay Ninh.

The heat strike was quite brief and it happened mostly at mid day in most places. Densely populated cities in Southern Vietnam and some places in the Central Coast (Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri) suffered from high temperatures all day. And generally speaking this period was still great for sightseeing tours, family holidays, trekking adventure holidays in Northern Vietnam and for beach vacations and island holidays in the Central Coast and Southern Vietnam. It was also good for sight-seeing tours in the Central Coast of the country mostly.

Then there was a new spell of the cool Northeasterly Wind hitting Vietnam on 24-March sending the weather in the North back to winter patterns. There were brief isolated rain in several areas in the North and in the Central Coast of Vietnam. The cool wind put an end to the heat strike in all over the country.

The weather in different regions in Vietnam in the last days of March 2023 after the arrival of the cool winter monsoon:
- Northeast of Vietnam: clouds, isolated rain , 16-21oC in the Northeast;
- Northwest of Vietnam: overcast skies, isolated rain, 18-23oC mostly; sun and clouds, 19-30oC in Dien Bien;
- Lowlands in northern Vietnam: clouds, some isolated rain, 18-24oC;
- North of the Central Coast: sun, rain, 20-24oC;

- Central Coast from Quang Binh to Hue: rain, clouds, 20-27oC;
- Central Coast from Da Nang to Quy Nhon: sun, clouds, isolated rain, 23-30oC;
- Central Coast from Tuy Hoa to Nha Trang: sun, clouds, isolated rain, 23-32oC;
- Central Coast from Phan Rang-Thap Cham to Phan Thiet: sun, 24-33oC;
- Central Highlands: sun and clouds, 19-34oC mostly; some isolated rain in Kon Tum;
- Southern Vietnam: sun, 24-34oC mostly, 26-36oC in Ho Chi Minh City, Bien Hoa, Tay Ninh.
