Vietnam Weather in July 2023

These are notes on Vietnam weather in July 2023 and what to know before planning travel vacations to Vietnam in 2023, be it your family holidays or your travelers’ Vietnam tours if you are a tour company or travel agent.

General Weather Patterns in Vietnam in July

July is summer in northern Vietnam, the hot season in the Central Coast of Vietnam. There is often heavy rain in the North of Vietnam, especially in the far northern mountains. As the Southeasterly Wind is more active compared to June, all of the North of Vietnam is to have more days with nice temperatures compared to June. And the Northwest of Vietnam is less under impact of the foehn wind.

To a lesser degree compared to June, part of the Northwest of Vietnam and part of the Central Coast of Vietnam (North of the Hai Van Pass) are under impact of the foehn wind which causes the air hot and dry. The sun is very strong and it is advisable to drink plenty of water and wear sunglasses and sunhats when going outdoors.

It is possible that there are typhoons or tropical depressions which may have impact in Northern Vietnam and North of the Central Coast. The typhoons often cause torrential rain in the far Northern Mountain which may cause landslides or flash floods. Under impact of a typhoon or tropical depression, cruises on Halong Bay are prohibited.

In the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam, July is the rainy season. Traveling in these two regions in July you are to expect a daily rain which lasts from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Due to bad sewage systems that streets in cities are temporarily flooded which disrupts traffic. And in the Central Highlands heavy rain may cause flash floods and landslides. Thanks to the rain that the temperatures are extremely pleasant in the Central Highlands and mostly nice and pleasant in the South of Vietnam.

On 14-July a tropical depression crossed the Luzon Island in the Philippines entering the East Vietnam Sea. 15-July the tropical depression strengthened and became the first Typhoon in Vietnam in 2023. The typhoon was internationally coded Talim. Boat trips to the Phu Quoc Island, Nam Du Island and Hon Son Island were suspended. 18-July the Typhoon made landfall on the southern coast of Guang Xi Province in China and quickly weakened to be a tropical depression by the evening.

Typhoon Talim did not directly hit northern Vietnam as previously anticipated but it caused strong winds in southern Vietnam. The reason was that the typhoon accumulated winds into its swirl by drawing in air which made the Southerly Wind in southern Vietnam drawn in and become much stronger. Strong gusts of winds in Southern Vietnam on 17-July and 18-July felled several trees in Ho Chi Minh City and in the Mekong Delta, and destroyed houses in the Mekong Delta.
