Vietnam Weather in April 2019

April is spring in North Vietnam with mostly mild sunshine and pleasant temperatures; hot and dry season in the Central Region and South of Vietnam. The western side of Vietnam from the North to the South is normally affected by the foehn effect which makes the air dry and hot.

 1/In the first week of 2019, the North received a new spell of the cool northeasterly wind which caused short-lived torrential rains in various regions in the North. The cool wind and the torrential rains helped the air fresh and it was no more moist indoors.

- Northeast of Vietnam (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang, Thai Nguyen) enjoyed mixed weather: short-lived torrential rains, cloudy and sunny days, 16-29oC.

- Northwest of Vietnam (Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau) had short-lived torrential rains in various provinces. This is not normal for this region. There was a day that Moc Chau had a torrential rains with hailstones. The temperatures were 19-31oC.

- Lowlands (Halong Bay, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh) were mostly cloudy&mildly sunny; there was a day or two with short-lived rains in some regions, 21-29oC.

The second week of April 2019 came with the foehn effect which made the air dry and hot in the Northwest of Vietnam.

- The Northeast of Vietnam was dry and sunny in the first half and had patchy rains in the second half of the week, 19-32oC. Dong Van Plateau in Ha Giang was mostly cloudy, 19-26oC.

- The Northwest of Vietnam was affected by the foehn wind and was mostly dry and hot. Hoa Binh, Yen Bai and Lao Cai were dry and sunny in the first half, had patchy rains in the second half, 22-34oC. Sapa was mostly sunny, 12-23oC. Mu Cang Chai had some rains, 20-29oC. Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau were dry, sunny and hot, 19-36oC. Moc Chau Plateau was sunny, 20-28oC.

- The lowlands were mostly sunny and humid in the first half of the week, some rains in the second half with windy days, 23-34oC.

The third week of April 2019 was marked by unusually early heat strike in the Northwest and the lowlands with several spots in the extreme Northwest of Vietnam with daily temperatures between 42-43oC. This is unprecedented in Vietnam.

- The Northeast of Vietnam had mixed weather: clouds, sun and rains, 17-35oC. Dong Van Plateau in Ha Giang had sun and clouds, 15-28oC.

- The Northwest of Vietnam Hoa Binh, Yen Bai and Lao Cai had a day with rains but mostly with sun. The temperatures were unsually high especially in Lao Cai, 24-37oC. Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau suffered from the foehn effect which means hot and dry air, 24-39oC. There were record high temperatures in several spots in Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau with temperatures between 40-42oC in a few days.

- The lowlands had the first half of the third week with pleasant temperatures of 24-28oC, some rains but mostly sun. The second half of the third week came with a heat strike which made the air hot and dry, 26-38oC.

The fourth week of April 2019 marked the end of the heat strike in the Northeast and low lands, part of the Northwest in northern Vietnam. The extreme Northwest (Son La, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai) still had high temperatures above 36oC. Torrential rains like summer ones were found in most of northern Vietnam.

- The Northeast had mixed weather: mostly clouds, some days with sun and some with rains. The temperatures were 20-34oC in the first half of the week, 19-29oC in the second half of the week.
- The Northwest: Hoa Binh and Yen Bai enjoyed mostly sunny days in the first half of the week, and cloudy days mostly and some days with rains in the second half, 24-33oC. Lao Cai was sunny and hot in the first half of the week, 24-38oC, and pleasant in the second half, 24-34oC.
Son La, Lai Chau and Dien Bien suffered from the heat strike with daily temperatures from 24-38oC, some areas recorded very high temperatures above 40oC, some rains in the last days of the month making the temperatures slightly better.
- The lowlands (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh) had sunny days in the first half of the week, cloudy and some rains in the second half of the way. The temperatures were mostly nice, 26-34oC.

2/ The North of the Central Region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh) has similar weather conditions to the North. In the first week of April 2019, the North of the Central Region had mixed weather: sunny, rainy, cloudy days. There was a hail in Ky Son (Nghe An) for 30 minutes. The temperatures were 21-31oC.

The second week of April 2019 the region suffered from the heat strike with sunny and hot weather in the first half of the week, it got better in the second half, 24-36oC.

The third week of April 2019 was characterized with mostly sunny weather and pleasant temperatures in the first half of the week, 24-31oC. In the second half of the third week, the heat strike made the air hot and dry with daily temperatures at record high levels, 28-43.4oC.

The fourth week of April 2019 was with sunny days mostly, with high temperatures in the first half (26-37oC, some locations recorded high temperatures reaching 40oC) and nicer temperatures in the second half (26-34oC).

3/The coastal areas in the Central Region of Vietnam (Central Coast of Vietnam including: Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan).

In the first week of April 2019, the Central Coast of Vietnam was sunny with pleasant temperatures,22-32oC. Quang Binh started getting hot at the end of the first week with temperatures reaching 36oC.

In the second week of April, the Central Coast was mostly sunny and with pleasant temperatures of 24-34oC. But the northern provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Hue suffered from the heat strike for most of the week, 26-38oC. For a couple of days, the temperatures were lower thanks to some rains.

Third week of April was with sunny days mostly; there were some rains in the regions from Quang Binh in Hue. The north of the Central Region from Quang Binh to Da Nang and Hoi An suffered from the heat strike most of the week. The southern part of the Central Region enjoyed mostly fine weather.

- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue: 25-35oC in the first half of the week and 28-43oC in the second half;
- Da Nang, Hoi An: Sunny, 26-35oC mostly, 27-38 for two days;
- Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen: sunny, 23-35oC mostly. Ba To District of Quang Ngai suffered some day with temperatures above 40.2oC.
- Khanh Hoa (Nha Trang), Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan: sunny, 26-34oC.

The fourth week of April was with hot weather in the area to the north of the Hai Van Pass and pleasant temperatures in the south of the Hai Van Pass.

- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue: sunny and hot, 26-39oC. There were several areas in Quang Binh with temperatures reach more than 42oC.
- Da Nang, Hoi An: Sunny, nice temperatures, 24-34oC.
- Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen: sunny and cloudy, 21-34oC.
- Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan: sunny and pleasant, 26-34oC.

4/ The Central Highlands of Vietnam (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong) is in the dry season in April. While it was mostly sunny in April 2019, there were unseasonal rains in various regions across the Central Highlands which helped so much with the ongoing serious lack of water. The temperatures were mostly 18-34oC, coming toward to end of the first week it got up to 36oC briefly at mid day in Dak Lak. Da Lat was mostly sunny, rainy on a day, 13-24oC.

The second week was sunny and hot, especially the western area of the Central Highlands, 21-37oC. For a couple of days of the second week, the temperatures got better, 20-33oC. Da Lat was mostly sunny, rainy for a coupe of days, 16-26oC.

Third week was with mixed weather: clouds, rains and sun; the temperatures were mostly pleasant, 22-33oC.

The fourth week was with the heat strike in the western side of the Central Highlands in the first half, sunny and hot days, 20-37oC. In the second half of the week, the weather changed to that of the rainy season with mixed sunny and cloudy days and nice temperatures, 20-34oC.

5/The South of Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Vung Tau, Dong Nai, and the Mekong Delta) is in the dry season and hot temperatures in April.

In the first week of April 2019, there were amazingly unseasonal rains across South Vietnam which helped to make the air cooler. But the rains were not usual and are believed to carry toxic elements. The temperatures were mostly 24-34oC. At the end of the first week, it was hot with 36oC in Binh Duong and Tay Ninh.

Second week was sunny and hot, 26-37oC. There were short-lived patchy rains in different regions in South Vietnam which helped to bring down the temperatures a bit. It is normal that April is the hottest time of the year in South Vietnam.

Third week was with patchy rains across the region but the temperatures were unusually high at 26-38oC for most of the week. The rains are unseasonal and the record high temperatures are not normal even it is the hottest time of the year in southern Vietnam.

The fourth week was sunny and very hot in all over South Vietnam in the first half of the week. In the second half of the week, the weather changed into the rainy season weather pattern mostly.

- Vung Tau, Saigon, Mekong Delta was mostly sunny in the first half of the week, 27-38oC; cloudy, with rains in the second half, 27-35oC.
- Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc: sunny mostly in the first half and cloudy and with some rains in the second half; 26-39oC in the first half of the week and 26-37oC in the second half.
