How to travel from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Hanoi

Hanoi is 1,800km north of Ho Chi Minh City (also known as Saigon). Ho Chi Minh City is the economic center of Vietnam while Hanoi is the capital city of the country. Ho Chi Minh City is young and dynamic while Hanoi is traditional and more reserved. Both cities are major tourist attractions in Vietnam. The convenient means of transportation to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi are as follows:

 By air: There are several daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to Hanoi, the flight time is 2 hours 15 minutes. The airports are 8km from the city center in Ho Chi Minh City and 40km from the city center in Hanoi.

By private car: due to the long distance and busy traffic, traveling from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi by car is not convenient. The road trip should take 3-4 days to make it safe.

By local bus: There are some bus companies operating daily buses from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi. The trip start from Ho Chi Minh City tourist quarter or the Eastern Bus Station and concludes at Nuoc Ngam Bus Station in Hanoi. The journey takes 38-40 hours.

By train: There are many overnight trains from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi with soft seat cabins and sleeper cabins. The train journeys take approximately 30-34 hours. Both train stations are centrally located in each city.
