The Ta Phin Village is home to mostly the Red Dao (pronounced Zao) ethnic group. The village is 12km north of Sapa Town via Route 4D. Say you travel from Sapa to Lao Cai via Route 4D for 5-6km, there is a smaller route to the Ta Phin Village to the left. Turn into this route and travel further for 5-6km then you’ll be in the village.

Visiting the Ta Phin Village is an easier experience as the terrain is basically flat which is nothing compared to Cat Cat, Ta Van… There are some attractions in the village which may be of interest to you and which are not available in other villages in Sapa.
What to see, Things to do
1/ Red Dao Houses
The Red Dao at Ta Phin live in houses on the ground which is similar to the Black H’mong. But the houses of the Red Dao have earthen walls while those of the H’mong have mostly wooden walls, roofs, frames… The houses of the H’mong have no windows and are characterized by black or dark slate gray colors.
2/ Ruin of a once monastery
The Ta Phin Village is in a nice valley with mountains around. On the entrance to the village you can see a ruin of a deserted monastery. The building was constructed in 1942 by 12 nuns from Hanoi. Due to political turmoil they went back to the city and the building was deserted. In 1979 part of the building was destroyed by Chinese artillery during their invasion.
3/ Ta Phin Cave
At the other end of the Ta Phin Village there is a huge cavern inside a mountain. There have been fatal accidents here so you may like to think twice before venturing into the cave.
4/ Herbal Bath
The Dao make huge wooden bathtubs which are filled up with herbal hot water which is said to be good for the health. There are Dao families in Ta Phin who offer the service to the visitors.
5/ Trekking Tours
Ta Phin can be the base for exploring hidden villages and seldom visited by tourists to Sapa. The trekking adventure tours can be done in 2 days, 3 days from Ta Phin. The tours are operated by AdventureGreen, a Hanoi-based adventure tour operator.
Where to stay
There are a few homestay in the area of the Ta Phin Village all of which have lovely natural settings around and with great view of the valleys and rice terraces.
