History
The Bich Dong Pagoda was built in 1428, right after Vietnam (named Dai Viet then) was liberated from the Ming Dynasty (China) by King Le Loi who started his rebellion in 1427.
Architecture, What to see, Things to do
1/ Chua Ha (Lower Pagoda)
This is dedicated to deceased monks who had contribution to the pagoda throughout the history. Chua Ha is equivalent to “Nha To” in other Buddhist pagodas inn Vietnam, a worshiping quarter for deceased monks to the rear of the pagoda.
In the front of the Chua Ha there is a yard and opposite the Chua Ha across the yard there is a house for monks and nuns.
2/ Chua Trung (Middle Pagoda)
Chua Trung has two parts: one building half inside a cave and the cave itself. The pagoda is dedicated to the Buddhas and Buddhism. From Chua Ha to Chua Trung we have to climb 120 stone steps on a steep mountain slope.
Above the Chua Trung, the mountain is vertically steep hundreds of meters to the top.
3/ Chua Thuong (Upper Pagoda)
Chua Thuong is a small complex including three shrines: one dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy, the others are for the God of the Mountain and God of the Land.
Chua Thuong is near the top of the mountain, but on the other side versus the Chua Trung. And from Chua Thuong we can have good views of the limestone mountains around the Bich Dong Pagoda.
To get to Chua Thuong from Chua Trung we have to travel through the dark cave with steep steps.
4/ Xuyen Thuy Dong
Below the pagodas, at the base of the mountain, there is a 350m underwater cave named Xuyen Thuy Dong. Visiting the cave by boat takes up to 30 minutes. The cave runs along the mountain and the boat trip stops near the pagoda entrance.
Best time to visit
Bich Dong Pagoda is a popular tourist attraction in Tam Coc and in Ninh Binh. Visiting the pagoda is a great experience all year round. But if you visit the pagoda in the period between May and August, then you get a pagoda amid a lake full of lotus flower blossoms.

Bich Dong Pagoda is 125km south of Hanoi and 9km from Route 1A, 8km south of Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, 2km from Tam Coc rowing boat park.
