Vinh Long Province is located to the heart of the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. The provincial capital, the eponymous city of Vinh Long, is 150km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City via Route 1A and 130km from Ho Chi Minh City via the new expressway Trung Luong – My Thuan.
The Mekong River enters Vietnam via two major branches:
- The Tien River (Upper Branch of the Mekong River in Vietnam) starts from Tan Chau (Hong Ngu District, Dong Thap Province);
- The Hau River (Lower Branch of the Mekong River in Vietnam) starts from Chau Doc City (An Giang Province).
Both branches of the Mekong River in Vietnam run along the northwest-southeast axis and they create an island in between, from northwest to southeast: Dong Thap, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh.
Tourist Attractions, What to See
1/ An Binh Island
The island is an interesting and popular tourist attraction in Vinh Long which provides a glimpse of the local life. There are several amazing occupations which are vanishing elsewhere and which are still found here. On this island you can visit and pick seasonal fruits in several exuberant orchards.
2/ Ancient House of Cai Cuong
The house belonged to a landlord family and was built in 1885 with French influence.
3/ Temple of Literature
The temple of literature in Vinh Long City is among the three first temples of literature in southern Vietnam. The others are in Dong Nai and Ho Chi Minh City.
4/ Chua Ong Temple (Phuc Kien – Fujian Congregational Assembly)
The temple in Vinh Long City was built in 1892-1909 with Chinese style by skilled workers from China.
5/ Ancient House of Nha Xua (Phuoc Hau Commune, Long Ho District, Vinh Long)
The old house of a wealthy family in Vinh Long which has been turned into a tourist attraction. The house is with Vietnamese southern style with lovely a orchard around.
6/ Brick Kilns
If you love the look of ancient architectures by the Mekong River then this is the place. They are not ancient architectures at all, they are brick kilns but with ancient look and feel. The brick kiln site stretches for 30km on riverside of the Co Chien River in Long Ho and Mang Thit Districts of Vinh Long Province. You can spend the whole day here from early dawn to dark to get amazing photos of this place.
