Trang An in Ninh Binh, in a broader sense as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, includes series of spots including Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, Tam Coc – Bich Dong, Thung Nang, Trang An Eco Tourist Zone… All these places are in Ninh Binh City, Tam Diep City, and Hoa Lu, Gia Vien, Nho Quan Districts.

In this article we only address Trang An Ecological Zone which is a tourist destination with rivers, flooded valleys, forest, limestone mountains, underwater caves….
Weather and Climate, Best time to visit
In spring time from late January through March, there are days that the mountains at Trang An are covered in mist which makes it a mysterious charm.
April is transitional time between spring and summer with most days having sunshine and only some days with fog; the temperatures are very pleasant.
From May through August, it is summer in Ninh Binh and Trang An may be warm or hot. The sun is often strong.
It is autumn from mid August through October and Trang An is more idyllic with blue skies and the autumnal vibe for which Ninh Binh is quite well-known for. The temperatures are very pleasant.
There may be some typhoons hitting northern Vietnam between June – October which may cause rain for a couple of days each and visiting Trang An is still possible but not a good experience.
From mid November through January and sometimes into early February it is winter time in Ninh Binh. It is mostly dry with overcast skies and it could be very cold. Make sure you have enough warm clothes visiting Trang An as it is quite cool amid the mountains with strong winds.
What to see, Tourist Attractions
1/ Rivers, Mountains, Underwater Caves, Forest
Visiting Trang An the visitors are to take boat trips taking in what Trang An has: rivers, mountains, forest, underwater caves. There are 31 lakes, 48 caves,… of which some have names and some do not have.
2/ Temples and Pagodas
There are quite a few spiritual sites at Trang An that can be visited on your boat trip. Some require climbing steep steps. Visiting them all takes time and you are better to allow time for your trip to Ninh Binh. These sites include: Den Trinh Temple, Tu Tru Temple, Den Tran, Cao Son, Suoi Tien...
Things to do
1/ Rowing boat trip
Visiting Trang An Eco Tourist Zone, we all have to take a 3-hour boat trip (or shorter trip) on a river which goes through underwater caves, towering limestone mountains, forests… The trip goes in a loop which is different from the boat trip at Tam Coc and Van Long Nature Reserve.
2/ Cycling
Trang An is a scenic area that you can cycle around in half a day and take in the idyllic countryside of Ninh Binh.
3/ Walking
It is also a good experience to wander on foot amid the mountains of Trang An when the temperatures are not too warm and when the sun is not too strong. The area is huge and and may be too much for a walk, you may have to call someone to take you back by car or by scooter.

Trang An Eco Tourist Zone is 120km south of Hanoi and 7km west of Route 1A, 3km south of Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, 5km north of Tam Coc.
