The Pu Luong Nature Reserve is in Quan Hoa and Ba Thuoc Districts of Thanh Hoa Province, 130km from Thanh Hoa City. The nature reserve has been popular to nature-lovers and trekking fans, mostly from overseas. There are patches of forest, waterfall and Thai communities to visit.
Travel Guide to the Pu Luong Nature Reserve, Thanh Hoa
‘Pu Luong’ in the local Thai language and ‘Pha Luong’ in the Lao Language mean the same: the big mountain; Pu means mountains and Luong means big. Pu Luong is the name of the nature reserve in which there is the Pu Luong Mountain (Big Mountain) which is 1,700m above sea level.
The Pu Luong Mountain runs along a northwest-southeast axis to the west of the nature reserve and to the east of the nature reserve there are several mountains which also arrange along a northwest-southeast axis.
What To See, Tourist Attractions in the Pu Luong Nature Reserve
There are several ethnic villages at the Pu Luong Nature Reserve which are scattered on the side of the Pu Luong Mountain to the west of the nature reserve and on the sides the other mountains to the east of the nature reserve. The below villages are listed in the order from north to south. There are other villages in between these villages but not listed here due to close proximity.

Kho Muong is a hidden small village in a valley with rice fields. Kho Muong offers the visitors peace and lovely landscape.
6/ Bat Cave (Hang Doi) (Thanh Son Commune, Ba Thuoc)
The Bat Cave is a 15-minute walk from the Kho Muong Village. This is a huge cavern inside a towering limestone mountain with several bats taking shelter inside.
7/ Ban Bang (Thanh Son Commune, Ba Thuoc)
8/ Ban Don (Thanh Lam Commune, Ba Thuoc District)
The village is close to Pho Don (Pho Doan) and is more accessible to visitors.
9/ Son – Ba – Muoi (Lung Cao Commune, Ba Thuoc District)
These are three highest villages in Pu Luong with elevation of 1,200m and with cool climate all year round.
10/ Hieu Village and Waterfall (Co Lung Commune, Ba Thuoc District)
The cascading waterfall offers nice swim and lovely photos.
11/ Pu Luong Mountain Peak
A trekking adventure to the peak of the nature reserve is great. The views of the landscape from above are just sublime. The Pu Luong Mountain Peak, approximately in the middle of the mountain, is close to the Pu Luong Village, Ban Bang Village and Ban Don Village.
12/ Pho Don (Pho Doan) Market
The market gatherings are in the morning every Thursday and Sunday only. People in the neighborhood of different ethnic groups come and trade and they are dressed up in traditional clothes. The market has a wonderful vibe. The Pho Doan Township is located to the south of the nature reserve of Pu Luong.
AdventureGreen, an adventure tour company in Vietnam, organizes long-distance trekking tours and day hiking trips in Pu Luong. The tours follow different hiking routes ranging from moderately difficult to very difficult levels.
