The Cai Rang Floating Market is in Tan An Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City. The market is 7km by waterway and 10km by road. It takes half an hour either by boat or by road to get to the market from the Ninh Kieu Wharf.
Overview
1/ When the floating market was formed?
No one knows for certain when the market was established here. The Mekong Delta is dissected into different islands and lands by tributaries of the Mekong River. And it is normal when roads were not available here people traveled mostly by boat and exchange of goods took place on the water for convenience and that they would not have to pay any fees.
People were aware that there were few floating markets in the Mekong Delta from the late 19th century when agriculture was more productive and the Mekong Delta had a bigger enough population. It was then that there were enough demands for exchange of goods that markets were needed.
Originally, the market was a wholesale one that retailers gathered agricultural goods at Cai Rang and would sell them at different markets in Can Tho. Earlier, market gathering was from 2:00 A.M to 5A.M. But the daily market now is from 05:00 A.M to 09:00 A.M as merchants are hopeful to get some sales from tourists.
How To Get There
1/ By road
From Ninh Kieu Wharf head southwest along the 30/4 Route by the riverside to the Cai Rang Bridge, cross the river and turn right for a couple of hundred meters.
2/ By boat
There are boats at the Ninh Kieu Wharf that offer trips to the floating market. The trip takes 30 minutes each way.
