Geography
Several communes of the district are on high altitudes of 1,500-2,000m above sea level with sublime natural landscapes. The peak of Bac Yen is Phu Sa Phin with altitude of 2,879m above sea level. The Da River has 70km in Bac Yen which offers lovely boat trips.
Climate
Bac Yen has a tropical monsoon climate. The temperatures are low all year round: on high altitudes, the temperatures are below 20oC in the summer and below water freezing point in the winter often. In the lower lands, the temperatures are 2-5oC higher.
The rainy season is from May through October and the dry season is from November through April. During the period from August through October there may be typhoons in northern Vietnam and Bac Yen may have torrential rain.
It is about rice harvesting season in late September and early October. Visiting Bac Yen at this time, you can get amazing photography of golden rice terraces amid unreal clouds.
People and Population
The district is inhabited by seven ethnic groups, mostly by the H’mong People whose wooden houses are on steep mountain slopes and who account for nearly 45% of the population and the Thai who inhabit in valleys. Other five ethnic groups with a small number of people in Bac Yen are Tay, Muong, Kinh, Dao, Kho Mu.

Bac Yen is 200km northwest of Hanoi via Route 32 and Route 37.
3/ From Moc Chau (Son La Province)
Bac Yen is 75km northwest of Moc Chau District of Son La Province via Route 43 and 37,
4/ From Tram Tau (Yen Bai Province)
Bac Yen is 65km south of Tram Tau District of Yen Bai Province via the provincial route 112.
