Vietnam Weather in May

May is the beginning of summer in North Vietnam, hot and dry season in the Central Region of Vietnam and beginning of the rainy season in the Central Highlands and South of Vietnam. Co To Island weather in May

1/North of Vietnam there may be occasional rains with thunderstorms but the rains are short-lived and it is mostly sunny every day. The Northeast gets more rains than the Northwest and the lowlands. The temperatures are getting higher 29-35oC and some days it may get beyond 35-36oC.

- The Northeast of Vietnam (Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Ha Giang, Thai Nguyen) has the lowest temperatures of different sub-regions in the North, 25-35oC.

- The Northwest of Vietnam has 2 sub-regions:
+ Hoa Binh, Yen Bai and Lao Cai has lower temperature levels: 28-35oC

+ Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau are strongly affected by the foehn effect and has higher temperatures than the rest of North Vietnam, 28-36oC.

- The lowlands (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh) has sunny weather most of the time, but there are short-lived rains with thunderstorm every now and then. The temperatures are 28-35oC.

2/North of the Central Region (Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh) is sunny and dry mostly. This region is strong under the influence of the foehn effect and the temperatures are high, 30-36oC.

3/The coastal areas in the Central Region of Vietnam (Central Coast of Vietnam including: Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Phu Yen, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan) is deep in the dry season and hot season.

- Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue: sunny and hot mostly, 30-36oC.

- Da Nang, Hoi An: sunny, 29-35oC;

- Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh (Quy Nhon Beach), Phu Yen (Tuy Hoa Beach): sunny, 27-35oC.

- Khanh Hoa (Nha Trang), Ninh Thuan (Ninh Chu Beach), Binh Thuan (Phan Thiet Beach, Mui Ne Beach): sunny, 27-35oC.

4/The Central Highlands (Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Lam Dong) are beginning of the rainy season, 20-35oC. The rains are short-lived and normally in the afternoon and it is normally sunny in day time.

5/The South of Vietnam (Vung Tau, Saigon, Mekong Delta) is beginning of the rainy season. The temperatures are 28-35oC. The rains are often in the afternoon daily and last for 30 – 60 minutes each.
The vicinity Saigon to the Northwest (Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc): beginning of the rainy season, but often with higher temperatures than the rest of South Vietnam, 29-37oC.

The temperatures are nice all over the country (below 35oC). Hanoi has a gloomy and wet morning, cloudy and dry in the late afternoon, the northerly wind makes the air pleasant.

5-May-2019 A cloudy day in most of Vietnam, cloudy and warm in the northern region of the Central Coast (Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Hue), and the vicinity of Ho Chi Minh City. The weather has taken a change since yesterday in Hanoi and northern Vietnam. It has been wet and foggy in Hanoi with rain dusts which is normally found in February or March only. South of the Central Region starts to get warm with mid day temperatures at 35-36oC.

It has been unsual in northern Vietnam as the northerly wind blows. This type of wind should be in the winter or spring only and should not be present in the North in May. The northerly wind makes it cloudy, dry and beautiful a day in most of northern Vietnam and in Hanoi.

8-May-2019 A rainy day in North Vietnam, cloudy and rainy day in the Central Region (including the Central Highlands), a cloudy day in South Vietnam. Lovely temperatures (below 35oC) are everywhere except for Binh Dinh (high at 36oC). The cool northerly wind in northern Vietnam makes the air pleasant. Still, this weather pattern is not normal in the summer in the North. The northerly wind is found mostly in the winter and it seems the North of Vietnam has switched back to winter weather patterns.

9-May-2019 Another lovely day in all of Vietnam, mostly clouds, some patchy rains. The North of Vietnam enjoys lovely weather with pleasant temperatures. A wonderful day for adventure tours like hiking, trekking, or cycling in the far-northern mountain; not so great for sun-worshiping on the beaches in the Central Coast and South of Vietnam though.
